Membership categories, annual financial and other contributions

In line with the BHRLA’s mission to inspire and advance business and human rights leadership, learning, collaboration and practice among commercial law firms and business lawyers around the world, membership of the Association is limited to commercial law firms and individual lawyers advising business enterprises in the area of business and human rights. 

Members acknowledge the business responsibility to respect human rights in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (“UNGPs”). 

Applications for membership shall be subject to approval by the Board of Directors or its delegate(s) and payment of an annual membership contribution. 

In line with the Association's mission, the BHRLA will actively engage with non-members that have a demonstrable interest in the Association's activities and in commercial legal practice in the field of business and human rights, including governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, professional associations, academics and students.   

Membership Categories

Law Firm Members

Full membership of the Association is open to commercial law firms advising business enterprises in the area of business and human rights and wishing to contribute to the mission, activities and workplan of the BHRLA.

In addition to payment of the annual membership financial contribution, Law Firm Members commit to contribute time to support the operations and activities of the Association.

Law Firm Members are eligible to:  

  • Participate in all activities of the Association and are not limited in the number of individuals within the firm who may have access to the Association's activities.  

  • Participate in the governance and setting the agenda of the BHRLA.


Annual Membership Financial Contribution

Law Firm Members

  • Law firms with more than 200 fee-earning lawyers - £3000

  • Law firms with more than 50 but fewer than 200 fee-earning lawyers – £1000

  • Law firms with fewer than 50 fee-earning lawyers -- £500

Individual Members - £100

Membership is based on a calendar year.  Members admitted after 1 September shall be deemed to have paid their annual membership financial contribution for the following year.

Individual Members

Individual membership is open to the following individuals who are actively engaged in advising business enterprises in the area of business and human rights.

  • Lawyers practising within commercial law firms that are not Law Firm Members of the Association.

  • Lawyers employed in a legal advisory role within a business enterprise which has committed to respect human rights in line with the UNGPs.

  • Barristers/sole practitioners.

Individual Members are eligible to:

  • Participate in all activities of the Association that are not limited to Law Firm Members.
