Please join us for a conversation with UN Working Group Chair Robert McCorquodale on the eve of his report to the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly. The report is here.

The event will begin with an overview of the report’s findings followed by an informal conversation among BHRLA members regarding the ways in which human rights matters are currently integrated into corporate governance in various jurisdictions. The above-referenced report considers existing and proposed national and local level corporate laws and practices and areas of concern relating to corporate governance, including directors’ duties and senior management responsibilities relating to human rights (encompassing labor, environment and climate issues).

The report explores how the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) have been, and should be, applied in relation to corporate governance. It focuses on directors’ duties and the responsibilities of senior executives in large companies, recognizing that corporate governance approaches and decisions made by boards and senior management of large businesses have impacts worldwide, including on small and medium-sized businesses. It explores the connection between poor corporate governance concerning human rights matters and adverse human rights impacts, affecting workers, communities and other rightsholders, and calls on States to introduce laws so that corporate governance frameworks require directors and senior executives to take human rights considerations into account in decision-making.

The BHRLA was pleased to support this important initiative through member contributions on national and local level developments.
