IBA Side Event: The Global Outlook for Business and Human Rights Regulation and Innovation
The United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) contemplate a role for states and businesses in advancing business respect for human rights. But the growing complexity and realignment of strategic government relationships, and an ever-increasing emphasis on energy, security and defense imperatives are reshaping the global context for government legal and regulatory measures to promote business respect for human rights.
While South Korea is moving to enact the region’s first mandatory human rights due diligence law, the European Parliament is now negotiating a narrower scope for its own mandatory human rights due diligence measure. These dynamics are playing out across the globe.
The panel–moderated by Kevin O’Callaghan with Martijn Scheltema, Claudia Feldkamp LLM J.S.D., Jennifer Prospero, Marwa Abdou, and Christopher Pigott–will explore the shifting landscape of business and human rights regulation, and ongoing voluntary innovation and collaboration, and implications for the role of counsel.
